Audiometry

Pure Tone Audiometry

Pure-Tone-Audiometry

This is a simple hearing test that measures the threshold at which you can hear at different frequencies. This test is done with the patient sitting in a sound treated room and hearing to different sounds. Patient simply responds by pressing the button whenever he/she hear the faintest sound. This test takes about 15 mins. This test requires voluntary response from the patient and is performed above 4 years of age.

Speech Audiometry

This test is done on patients identified with hearing loss. Speech is presented in the ears instead of tones and threshold for speech is determined. Speech Reception Threshold (SRT) and Speech Discrimination Score (SDS) is identified. This gives an idea about the speech perception of the patient.

Impedance Audiometry

Impedence-Audiometry

This is an automatic test that measures middle ear functioning. A probe is inserted in the ear canal which will vary the pressure in the ear canal. The movement of tympanic membrane in response to change in pressure is recorded and presented in the form of a graph. This test also records the middle ear muscle contractions in response to sound. This test can be done for all age groups. This test takes about 10 mins.

Oto Acoustic Emmissions (OAEs)

Oto Acoustic Emmissions

This is one of the recently developed tests, which is more of a screening test done on infants to assess their hearing. An ear tip is inserted in the ear canal and sound is presented at a moderate level. The emissions (reflections) of that sound are recorded. This test is done on high risk babies suspected of having hearing loss for early identification and intervention. This test is also done in a sound treated environment.

Short Increment Sensitivity Index (SISI)

This is a special hearing test done to identify cochlear involvement if the patient has Sensori-Neural (SN) hearing loss. If this test is positive the patient has recruitment and is hyper sensitive to moderately loud sound. This test is done if patient has SN hearing loss and tinnitus.

Tone Decay Test (TD Test)

This test is done to assess the health of the hearing pathway. If this test is positive it indicate central neural pathology and further detailed investigation.
